How to Build an Urban Survival Tin for Disruption, Disaster & Attack

This Urban Survival Tin is designed to increase chances of survival and rescue or escape specifically in an urban environment should things go bad. It is designed for both domestic and travel use, although you cannot hand carry this tin on a plane.

What makes this tin different is that it focuses on urban survival.  This is not an outdoor or wilderness survival kit. The urban environment is quite different with different opportunities and different challenges.

Most survival tins shared were designed for the outdoors and urban tins were designed more as convenience kits for EDC or everyday carry.

Design & Function of the Urban Survival Tin

This urban survival tin was designed for surviving three different scenarios that can take place in an urban environment:

    • Disruption – E.g., power outages, protests, riots.
    • Disaster – E.g., natural disasters, major accidents.
    • Attack – E.g., terrorist, active armed assailants, unstable individuals.

The kit provides an increased chance of survival in these three situations by providing three main functions:

    • Illumination
    • Utility
    • First Aid

Now, this is not an exhaustive survival kit that will guarantee your survival in any situation but it may increase your chances substantially, which makes it worthwhile.

This is meant to be an EDC (that is everyday carry) so it was designed to be small, compact and as lightweight as possible.

The kit features 25 items with more than 50 practical functions for urban disaster survival.

If you are indoors during a disruption, disaster, or attack scenario, it is highly likely that you will be faced with a power failure or blackout. If there are no windows or if it is at night, this means that you will need light. So having multiple light sources in the tin is invaluable.

Utility refers to tools or items that allow you to perform some tasks that could not be achieved without a specific item. Cutting tools, multi-tools, and cordage will be under this function.

First aid is self-explanatory. Although it is impossible to put any meaningful first aid items in the tin, they can help boost morale and increase comfort.

The tin was also designed with the consideration that in an urban environment when a survival situation arises, it is highly likely you will not be alone. So, several items were included to take this into account. Helping others could very well contribute to your own survival, as having others in distress, panic, or shock can affect your situation.
